m PÄD. special subject; ich bin im Leistungskurs Geschichte I’m taking history as a special subject* * *Leistungskurse are the two specialist subjects chosen by students in the upper classes of a Gymnasium, during the Kollegstufe. Six hours a week are devoted to each subject, allowing more time for special projects and the students' own work. Those taking the Abitur have to write a Facharbeit – similar to a short university seminar paper – on one of the subjects. Together with examinations in the two subjects, this makes up a third of the overall mark for the Abitur. In a Gesamtschule, Leistungskurse are more advanced courses.
